1) Fluid Retention

One of the main effects of surgery on your body is that it starts retaining water, which means your body starts accumulating water. This condition is medically termed as edema and under this condition water gets trapped usually in your hands and feet. When the excess fluids start getting trapped in tissues in different body parts, your body swells up, giving you a plump body shape.

2) Trauma

Another reason a person gains weight post surgery is due to the trauma that your body tissues go through. This leads to inflammation and eventually results in water retention. In a minimal invasive surgeries water retention is lower. However in case of an accident and trauma the water retention is high and this leads to an increase in weight.

3) Stress

Post surgery stress results in high levels of anti-diuretic hormones or ADH which results in conserving of water by kidneys. This process leads to eventual weight gain. Post surgeries, a patient is under different medications and intravenous drugs which shifts fluids in the body. The process yet again leads to water retention and an increase in weight.

4) Stagnation

After surgery a patient is advised to take as much rest as possible for speedy recovery. This results in stagnation and limited body movement. This in results leads to gain in weight. Post recovery period patients are encouraged by their doctors to get their life back in routine and do some light exercises to shed excess weight and freshen up their mind.

5) Comfort Food

Post surgery, a patient has all the liberty to pamper his/her taste buds. This means they end up eating all kinds of foods they like which also includes unhealthy food options. The whole lot of unhealthy foods or comfort foods add up excess calories in the body. Lack of physical activity and consumption of unhealthy foods thus results in weight gain.
